UH sailors capture regatta

The University of Hawai'i co-ed sailing team captured the Stoney Burke Intersectional at San Francisco yesterday for its first regatta victory on the Mainland in two years.

The Rainbows finished with a low-best total of 105 points to top the 23-team field. Hawai'i's William Petersen and Tahnee Allman finished second in A division with 49 points, while Zachary Hester, Darla Baldwin and Craig Schifferns placed third in B division with 56 points.

Cal Maritime finished a distant second with 122 points, with USC (124), UC Santa Barbara (152) and UC Irvine (161) rounding out the top five.

The Rainbows' last regatta win on the Mainland came in the PCCSC Sloop Championships in 2007.

FULLER HONORED

Hawai'i Pacific's Meghan Fuller has been named Pacific West Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Fuller scored four goals as the Sea Warriors went 2-1 last week.

She scored in the second overtime Tuesday of a 1-0 victory over Academy of Art, then had three goals in a 4-1 victory Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday.

HONOLULU SECOND

A men's team from Ho-nolulu finished second at the USTA League 3.0 Adult National Championships yesterday at Tucson, Ariz.

Westfield (N.J.) beat Honolulu, 4-1, in the championship match. Earlier in the day, Honolulu beat Buffalo, 4-1, in the semifinal round.

The Honolulu team is co-captained by Dean Yamashiro and George Uedoi. The team also includes Paul Wong, Doug Choy, Steve Zubowicz, Len Yorimoto, Bruce Ladeira, Rodney Resuello, Drew Pastor Saranillio, Michael Chong, Mark Komatsu, Ed McGovern and Kevin Shimata.

CROSS COUNTRY

ESAKI SPURS 'IOLANI

'Iolani's Troy Esaki placed second in the boys sophomore race at Saturday's Central Park Invitational in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Esaki finished the 3-mile run in 16 minutes, 58 seconds, helping the Raiders place ninth.

Borys Pleskacz placed 16th in the boys varsity II race in 16:43, helping the Raiders finish fourth.

On Friday, Jenna Wong led 'Iolani to a second-place finish in the senior girls race of the Dos Pubelos Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif. Wong finished third in the 3-mile run in 20:01.

UH LAST IN CALIFORNIA

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a 24-over-par 312 yesterday and was in last place of the 13-team Prestige at PGA West tournament at La Quinta, Calif.

UCLA leads after the first round with an 8-under 280.
