Vulcans ranked No. 19 in poll

The Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball team moved up a spot to No. 19 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division IITop 25 released yesterday.

Concordia-St. Paul (21-0) was a unanimous No. 1, receiving all 32 first-place votes. Cal State San Bernardino (18-0) is No. 2, followed by UC San Diego (18-1).

The Vulcans (17-1 overall, 7-1 Pacific West Conference) defeated Hawai'i Pacific in four sets in their only match last week.

EAST O'AHU HOSTS

The East O'ahu Boys Volleyball Club will host a junior tournament at Holy Trinity gym this week with local and Canadian teams.

The tournament features Alberta high schools Hines, M.E. LaZerte and St. Thomas Aquinas, and local clubs Outrigger, Ku'ikahi and East O'ahu. The Canadian teams have fundraised for more than two years and will be sending more than 100 players, coaches and chaperones.

Games will be 5:30 p.m. to tomorrow and Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $1 per person. For information call 371-1868.

HPU BEATS DIXIE ST.

Chance Bukoski scored in the 61st minute to give Hawai'i Pacific a 1-0 victory over Dixie State in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer match yesterday at Saint George, Utah.

HPU is 7-2-1 overall and4-2-1 in the PacWest. Dixie State is 3-6-1 and 1-5.

In other PacWest soccer matches:

• Chris McElwee and Collin Walch scored for Brigham Young-Hawai'i in a 2-1 victory over Dominican at San Rafael, Calif. BYUH is 4-6-1 and 3-3-1. Dominican is 5-6-1 and 2-3-1.

• Logan Montenegro had Hawai'i-Hilo's only goal in a 3-1 loss to Notre Dame de Namur at Belmont, Calif. Notre Dame de Namur is 5-8-1 and 5-1-1. UHH is 5-7 and 4-2.

• Michael Marrs, Keenan Ho, Brandon Salvador and Nick Ogata scored goals for Chaminade's in a 4-2 victory over the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Chaminade is 2-7 and 1-5. Academy of Art 4-8-1 and 1-6.

• Margaret Sekona scored in the 74th minute to give BYUH's women a 1-0 victory over Dominican at San Rafael, Calif. BYUH is 8-2 and 6-1. Dominican is 4-6-2 and 2-3-1.

• Dixie State's women scored the first three goals and held on for a 3-2 victory over HPU at Saint George, Utah. The Sea Warriors' Amber Fuller scored two second-half goals. Dixie State is 7-3 and 6-0. HPU is 6-4-1 and 4-3. Fuller's sister, Meghan, was named PacWest Player of the Week yesterday for the second time this season. Meghan Fuller had four goals in three games last week.

• Alexis Tershay scored in the 88th minute to give Notre Dame deNamur's women a 1-0 victory over UH-Hilo at Belmont, Calif. Notre Dame de Namur is 4-8 and 4-3. UHH is 3-7-2 and 2-3-1.

• Academy of Art's women defeated Chaminade, 3-0, at San Francisco. The Urban Knights are 1-10-2 and 1-5-2. The Silverswords are 0-8 and 0-5.

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team remained in last place in the 13-team Prestige at PGAWest tournament in LaQuinta, Calif.

TCU shot a 285 for a two-round 574 for the team lead. UH shot a 321—633.

Daniel Jennevret of TCU shot a 5-under-par 67 to take a four-stroke lead at 8-under 136.

Freshman Alex Chu led UH with a 76 and was tied for 59th at 155.

The final round is scheduled for today.
