Soccer: Altidore back in US lineup after injury to Davies

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Jozy Altidore returned to the United States’ starting lineup for the World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica following the car accident involving Charlie Davies.

Altidore and Conor Casey were the forwards for Wednesday night’s match. Casey and Davies started Saturday’s 3-2 victory at Honduras that clinched the Americans’ World Cup berth.
Davies is in serious but stable condition after breaking several bones in an accident early Tuesday. He underwent several hours of surgery and is expected to need six to 12 months to recover.
There were two other changes from the Honduras starting lineup: Steve Cherundolo replaced Jonathan Spector at right back and Benny Feilhaber took over from Ricardo Clark in midfield.
Tim Howard was in goal, with Oguchi Onyewu and captain Carlos Bocanegra in central defense Jonathan Bornstein at left back, and Stuart Holden, Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan joining Feilhaber in midfield.
