Surfer Patacchia shares 5th in Spain

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore tied for fifth place at the Billabong Pro Mundaka men's surfing contest yesterday.

The final day of the event was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Sopelana, Spain.

Patacchia upset No. 1-ranked Mick Fanning of Australia in the third round, but then lost to Brazil's Adriano de Souza in the quarterfinals.

De Souza went on to win the contest, defeating defending world champion Kelly Slater of Florida in the semifinals, then Australia's Chris Davidson in the final.

Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani was eliminated in the third round.

The contest was the eighth of 10 stops on the 2009 ASP World Tour.

Fanning is currently ranked No. 1, followed closely by fellow Australian Joel Parkinson.

Patacchia is Hawai'i's top-ranked surfer at No. 15. Bacalso is No. 17.

The next event is the Rip Curl Search at Peniche, Portugal, later this month.

GOLF

UH finishes last


The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished last in the 13-team Prestige at PGA West tournament yesterday in La Quinta, Calif.

The Warriors shot 306—939, with sophomore Jared Sawada (72) and freshman Alex Chu (77) leading the way at 16-over 232.

TCU, led by medallist Daniel Jennevret's 68—204, won with 14-under 850.

TENNIS

Disaster relief


Hawai'i Interline Tennis will hold a "Disaster Tennis" benefit tournament Nov. 11 at the CORP Patsy T. Mink Tennis Complex in Waipahu. The event will benefit disaster victims in Indonesia, the Philippines and Samoa.

The tournament will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, with registration the first hour. Cost is $25 per person. Donations of clothes and canned goods will also be accepted.

Format is round-robin team play with teams chosen the day of the tournament.

Free lessons

The Hawaiian Isles Tennis Foundation "Hit For Health" will offer a free introductory lesson for children ages 6 to 11. The class will be Oct. 27, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Pacific Palisades Park.

Focus will be on fun and movement with instruction on proper mechanics for volleys, ground strokes and overheads.

Class will be led by USPTA Pro Dennis "D" Conroy, assistants and volunteers.

All participants are asked to bring two cans of food for the Hawai'i Food Bank.
