Halawa inmate dies after fight

A 46-year-old man who was an inmate at the state’s Halawa Prison was fatally injured yesterday morning during a fight with another inmate.

Police were told that the man who died was arguing with a 22-year-old inmate about 8:30 a.m. when the younger man punched him several times.
The injured man was found lying in the prison recreation yard and was taken to the facility’s clinic.
City paramedics were called to the prison and rushed the man to The Queen’s Medical Center where he later died.
Police arrested inmate James Gouviea on suspicion of second-degree murder.
