MLB: Melvin interviews for Astros manager job

CHRIS DUNCAN
AP Sports Writer

HOUSTON — Former Arizona manager Bob Melvin has interviewed for the same position with the Houston Astros.

Melvin is the fifth of 10 candidates that the Astros will interview. Former Washington Nationals manager Manny Acta was scheduled to meet with the team on Friday afternoon.

The Astros fired Cecil Cooper on Sept. 21 and promoted third-base coach Dave Clark to interim manager. Clark was the first candidate interviewed for the full-time position.

The 47-year-old Melvin was fired by Arizona in May after the Diamondbacks started 12-17. He took over the Diamondbacks in 2004, following a 51-111 season, and he guided them to a division title in 2007 to earn NL manager of the year honors.
