Police identify woman, 18, killed when car hit tree

Advertiser Staff

An 18-year-old Hilo woman killed in a single-car crash on Maikalani Drive near Amauulu Street was identified Wednesday as Sara Sutton.

Hawaii County police believe the crash took place sometime between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 8:27 a.m. Wednesday. The latter time is when officers responded to a call reporting a crashed car with a deceased driver.

Officers determined Sutton was the only occupant of the Honda sedan and was traveling west on Maikalani Drive when she veered off the road and hit a macadamia nut tree.

Sutton was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said Sutton was not wearing a seatbelt and that speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

Police ask anyone who has information about Sutton's activities before the crash to call Officer Clarence Davies at 961-8118 or the police department non-emergency line at 935-3322. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
