Moloka'i Hoe officials heed to protests, drop penalties

Upon further review, the final results for the 2009 Molokai Hoe have been adjusted.

Still, nobody is close to Shell Vaa.

After last Sunday's Molokai Hoe, more than 25 crews received a 10-minute penalty for a "uniform violation."

After numerous protests from some of the penalized crews, race officials decided last week to cancel the penalties.

"We found that the penalties were inconsistent," race director Stan Dickson said. "Some teams were called for it and some were not. That wasn't fair, so we decided not to punish anybody."

The uniform policy was added to the race rules this year. In short, all teams were required to wear matching jerseys for the race.

One of the crews affected by the uniform rule was the Keahiakahoe 60s. Initially, the crew thought it won the masters 60 division.

The paddlers discovered a day later that they had been penalized 10 minutes and had dropped from first to third in the masters 60 division.

"That was a kick in the butt," Keahiakahoe 60s paddler Bill Rees said. "We all had (Keahiakahoe) shirts on, it was just that some were different designs. We knew it wasn't fair."

With the lifting of the penalties, Keahiakahoe returned to its rightful spot atop the masters 60 division. This was the first year that the Molokai Hoe featured a masters 60 division.

"It's a big thing for us," Rees said.

Members of the Keahiakahoe crew were Rees, Shaka Madali, Glenn Higuchi, Keith Kaleo, Hollywood Alcantra, Michael Gibson, Jim Woessner, Timothy Haentjens, Jeff Ohara, Steve Landis and Boy Gerona.

Dickson said the uniform rule will remain in 2010, so teams now have a year to find matching jerseys.

"We want to bring a prestige to this race that it deserves," he said. "We know this is not a professional sport, but that doesn't mean we can not try and look professional."

Most of the affected teams were in the bottom half of the standings.

Shell Vaa from Tahiti won the Molokai Hoe for the fourth consecutive year. No teams in the top 40 were penalized.

The 41-mile race across the Kaiwi Channel is considered the world championship of long-distance outrigger canoe paddling for men's teams. A record-tying 111 crews entered the race.
