‘Make A Difference Day’ set for Saturday

Volunteers statewide this Saturday will be taking part in projects, ranging from beaches cleanups to a donation collection for the homeless, as part of the national event dubbed “Make a Difference Day.”
More than one dozen projects are slated for Hawaiçi. The lineup includes: cleanups at Waikiki Beach and at the Honolulu Zoo; landscaping and painting beautification of Hawaiçi Kai’s Lunalilo Home; and a donation drop-off site for basic toiletries for the homeless at the Ohana Fall Fair, Makalapa Elementary School in çAiea.

Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, “Make A Difference Day” is an annual effort on the fourth Saturday of every October. Last year, 3 million people participated in volunteer projects on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns, according to USA WEEKEND.
Participating events will be eligible for recognition, which includes charitable donations, provided by Newman's Own, of $10,000 for 10 projects. Honorees will be spotlighted in an April 2010 issue of the magazine.
