Court says councilman doesn’t live in his Lanai district

Associated Press

WAILUKU, Hawaii — The state Supreme Court has ruled Maui County Councilman Sol Kahoohalahala is a resident of Lahaina — not Lanai, the district he represents.
It was unclear what effect Tuesday’s 66-page ruling would have, if any.

County Counsel Brian Moto says he and the county clerk’s office are reviewing the ruling to determine its meaning and the county’s options.
Calls seeking comment from Kahoohalahala and council Chairman Danny A. Mateo weren’t immediately returned.
Kahoohalahala was born and lived much of his life on Lanai. But in recent years he has lived in a Lahaina home with his wife while he worked on Maui. He had argued he intended to return to Lanai and live with his brother in a family home.
