Swimming: Liu Zige sets 200 butterfly world record

Associated Press

JINAN, China — Liu Zige of China set a new world record in the women's 200-meter butterfly, taking 1.6 seconds off the previous mark.

Liu finished in 2 minutes, 1.81 seconds at China's National Games on Wednesday, domestic news agency Xinhua reported. That eclipsed the previous world mark of 2:03.41 set by Australian Jessicah Schipper at the World Championships this year.

Liu won the same event at the Beijing Olympics last year to clinch China's only swimming gold medal of the games. Jiao Liuyang, who took silver in the Olympics, was also second on Wednesday, nearly four seconds back.
