Hawaii International Film Festival honors awardees

The 29th annual Hawaii International Film Festival presented its 2009 awards yesterday at the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Theaters.

The winners were:

• Halekulani Golden Orchid Award for Narrative Feature:"Empire of Silver," directored by Yao Shuhua.

• Halekulani Golden Orchid Award for Documentary Feature: "Petition,"directed by Zhao Liang.

• Netpac Award:"Castaway on the Moon," directed by Hey-jun Lee.

• Puma Emerging Filmmaker Award: "Children of Invention,"directed by Tze Chun.

• Video-on-Demand Viewers Choice Award Powered by Oceanic Time Warner Cable and presented by Central Pacific Bank: "Ajumma!Are You Krazy?" directed by Brent Anbe.

On Saturday, actress Maggie Q will receive HIFF's Maverick Award, given to a cinema artist who "defies the rules, forging a unique film career, and transcending labels and thresholds to vacillate between Hollywood and global cinema," a HIFF news release said.

The Audience Awards for favorite feature, documentary and short will be announced on Nov. 2.
