South shore beach reopens two days after shark attack

Advertiser Staff

A stretch of beach on Maui's south shore was reopened yesterday after an air surveillance at noon showed no sightings of sharks in the area.

Maui County ocean safety officers and Department of Land and Natural Resources officials reopened the shoreline waters from Kamaole 1 Beach Park to Waiohuli Road. The area was closed Monday and yesterday morning following a shark attack on a male surfer yesterday at the surf spot known as Kalama Bowls.

Scott Henrich, 54, of Kíhei, was surfing when a shark estimated at 6 to 8 feet long bit him on his right leg. Henrich said he punched the shark's snout and it released its grip. It took 100 stitches to close the wound.
