Downtown hoolaulea for 'SOS'

Advertiser Staff

A star-studded lineup of local musicians, including Cecilio & Kapono, Amy Hanaialii and Brother Noland, will perform at today's Hawaii High School Athletic Association "SOS" (Save Our Sports) Downtown ho'olaulea near Murphy's Bar and Grill.

The event, a fundraiser for the SOS campaign to assist public school athletic departments strapped by budget cuts, is scheduled for 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Nu'uanu and Merchant streets will be shut down near Murphy's, and an entertainment stage will be set up in a nearby parking lot. Maunalua, Darren Benitez, Christian from Beach 5 and Mailani also will perform.

Food booths will feature items prepared, cooked and served by public school athletic directors and coaches from around the state. Scrip will be sold for $5 each or $20 for a book of five.

All proceeds will go toward the SOS Fund, which has raised close to $1.1 million to help public school athletic departments soften the blow from a 36-percent cut to their budgets compared with last year.
