Inmate charged in beating death of fellow prisoner

Advertiser Staff

Prison inmate James Gouveia was indicted yesterday on a manslaughter charge in the death this month of fellow inmate Monte Young.

Gouveia, 22, allegedly punched Young, 46, several times during an argument Oct. 14 at Hälawa Correctional Facility.

Young was found lying in the prison recreation yard and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he later died.

Young was serving a 100-year sentence for the May 10, 1997, unprovoked killing of a stranger at the University Avenue Burger King restaurant.

Gouveia was convicted of car theft and was sent to prison this year after repeatedly violating the terms of a probation sentence.
