Carll, Pakkala claim 4-Ball Match Play

Kevin Carll and Matt Pakkala beat Kevin Hayashi and Lance Taketa, 3 and 2, yesterday to capture the Aloha Section PGA’s Nike Golf/Golf Concepts 4-Ball Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.
Carll and Pakkala earned $3,000 and points toward Governor’s Cup selection and Section PGA Player of the Year for prevailing in the 22-team field.
Pakkala birdied the first and fourth holes as his team took a 2-up lead after nine holes. Taketa closed the deficit with a birdie on No. 10.
Carll’s birdie on No. 11 and Pakkala’s birdie on No. 14 gave them a 3-up lead. Hayashi’s birdie on No. 16 closed the deficit, but Carll ended the suspense when he drove the par-4, 17th hole for an eagle to clinch it.
Earlier in the day, Carll and Pakkala beat Gary Brown and David Chin, 5 and 4, and Hayashi and Taketa ousted Regan Lee and Beau Yokomoto, 1-up, in the semifinals.

MAUI TICKETS ON SALE

Exclusive all-tournament tickets are still available for the 2009 EA Sports Maui Invitational, which is hosted by Chaminade University.
The tickets are good for all 12 games during the men’s basketball tourney, which runs from Nov. 23 to 25 at Maui’s Lahaina Civic Center.
Tickets may be purchased through Chaminade’s Hui ‘Ähinahina Booster Club, which supports all 10 of the school’s NCAA Division II programs.
Chaminade’s first Maui Invitational package can be bought at the $500 booster level and increases in value and benefits from there. Complimentary packages are also available for boosters at the Silversword and Haleakala levels.
The 26th invitational field includes Arizona, Cincinnati, Colorado, Gonzaga, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and Chaminade.

Kelly Balanay had 18 kills and Kyra Pelayo contributed 45 digs as host Hawai‘i Pacific outlasted Dixie State, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 18-25, 16-14, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at St. Andrew’s Priory gym.
Julia Gruszecka added 15 kills, Mariana Souza had 13 kills and 15 digs, and Kelly Keating added 53 assists for the Sea Warriors (11-10, 8-4).
Katie Luna led the Red Storm (13-6, 6-4) with 16 kills and 24 digs.
In another PacWest match last night, Losaline Faka‘osi had 14 kills and 16 digs as Brigham Young-Hawai‘i swept visiting Academy of Art, 25-20, 25-19, 31-29.
Kylee Nawahine and Ane Vea added 10 kills apiece for the Seasiders (13-10, 9-4).
Dan Yang led the Urban Knights (16-9, 4-5) with 18 kills and 12 digs.
