Wie returns for two events

Advertiser Staff

Michelle Wie is immersed in her third year at Stanford — and ice packs — right now, but will take a break from the books to return to the LPGA Tour next month for two tournaments.

The Punahou graduate is planning to play in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, Nov. 12 to 15, in Mexico, and the LPGA Tour Championship, Nov. 19 to 22, in Houston.

Two other far-flung December tournament s are also possibilities: The Dubai Ladies Masters, Dec. 9 to 12, and the Hawai'i State Open, Dec. 18 to 20, at Turtle Bay Resort.

Swiss watchmaker Omega is the new sponsor of the Dubai Ladies Masters (Ladies European Tour) and Desert Classic (European Tour) and is also one of Wie's sponsors. And, Wie's father, BJ, said "there is a good chance" the family will be home in Honolulu for the holidays.

Wie, who turned 20 Oct. 11, hasn't lived here since graduating in 2007 but still has a hankering for Hawai'i. In a "tweet" this week she asked "how delicious does chili cheese fries from Zippy's sound?" She won the 2002 Hawai'i State Open women's championship by 13 shots, at age 13.

Wie also tweeted about "ice and tape being her best friends lately" as she recovers from an ankle injury. She aggravated the injury in her last tournament, while finishing second two and a half weeks ago at the Navistar LPGA Classic.

Wie is 14th in the Rolex World Ranking her rookie season. She has won nearly $700,000 and has seven top-10 finishes in 17 starts. That includes runner-up finishes in her first (SBS Open at Turtle Bay) and last starts of the year.

Statistically, she is sixth in putting (1.76), rounds under par (.667) and driving average (268.1), 11th in scoring (70.67), 25th in greens in regulation (.697) and 144th in fairways hit (.579).
