For Saturday's tee-it-up time, the University of Hawai'i football team has all but settled on a best-ball foursome.
Kealoha Pilares, who has played right slotback in the first four games, is expected to start at left wideout against No. 4- ranked Boise State.
That opens the way for Jon Medeiros to start at right slotback. The other two starting receivers are left slotback Greg Salas and right wideout Jovonte Taylor.
But head coach Greg McMackin said Joe Avery, who has had a strong week of practice, will get extended playing time at left wideout.
The shuffle was created when left wideout Rodney Bradley suffered fractures to the fibula and tibia in his left leg. He underwent season-ending surgery the past Saturday night in Moscow, Idaho. He is expected to make a full recovery.
After lengthy meetings Sunday and Monday, the coaches moved Pilares to left wideout during Tuesday's practice.
"He's got good speed and good moves," McMackin said. "He can make people miss."
In six games this season, Pilares has 41 catches for 369 yards. But 249 yards have come after the catch. His yards-after-catch (YAC) is 6.92. What's more, he is averaging 3.37 yards after breaking or eluding a tackle.
"We're going to play our four best (receivers), and he's one of our four best," McMackin said.
Pilares, who was the starting running back as a sophomore in 2008, said he is still trying to fully grasp the left wideout's duties. But he said he likes the more spacious routes the new position offers.
"It'll be fun," Pilares said. "I'm looking forward to it."
Medeiros, a fifth-year senior, is set to earn his first UH start. Medeiros, who rides the bus to school each day from Kapolei, was put on scholarship during the summer.
"We gave him a scholarship because he could make plays," McMackin said. "We were sort of stocked up on slot receivers. Now that we've moved Kealoha outside, he's the next guy."
Medeiros is one of UH's most reliable receivers. He has caught six of the seven passes in which he was the intended target. The lone incompletion was on an underthrown pass. His YAC average is 6.99.
"Now that I'm one of the four, I have to continue to do what I've been doing," Medeiros said. "No matter where you are on the depth chart, you still have to focus."
