When Bryant Moniz ascended to No. 1 quarterback for the Hawai'i football team, one concern was whether he would be as effective a scrambler as Greg Alexander.
Alexander, whose UH career ended last month because of a knee injury, still is the Warriors' leader in yards gained (164).
After breaking or eluding a tackle on a non-sack scramble, Alexander's average gain was 7.87 yards. He also averaged 1.13 broken or eluded tackles per scramble.
Moniz's yards-after contact average is 5.86. He averages 0.5 broken or eluded tackles per scramble.
Moniz credits his elusiveness to his hanabata days in Wahiawä.
"I guess it's from playing tag as a little kid," Moniz said. "It's slippers on the hands, trying to run away from everybody."
The Warriors are relying on Moniz's skills as a runner and passer in today's game against Boise State, the BCS's fourth-ranked team.
