Society of Seven finds a showroom home in Vegas

By Wayne Harada

After months of patience and tough negotiations amid a troubling economy, the Society of Seven — classic edition, led by Tony Ruivivar — has landed a Las Vegas showroom and found gold — the Gold Coast, that is.

The SOS will debut Nov. 6 at the Gold Coast showroom, in an extended run featuring "American Idol" third-season finalist Jasmine Trias. Showtimes will be 3:30 and 7 p.m. Fridays through Sundays, the early curtain targeting a niche audience and not competing with usual nighttime Vegas spectacles.

"We are thrilled to call Gold Coast home," said leader Ruivivar, who, with group co-founder Bert Sagum, has roots in the act dating back 40 years. "This long-term engagement gives loyal fans, who have supported us throughout the years, the opportunity to see us on a regular basis. We think our show is a great fit for the community."

The act — last at the Flamingo — will continue impersonations, comedy, dance, Broadway, Top 40 and pop classics that fans have cheered for decades. ...

Tickets — $29.95 — go on sale Friday at the box office, 702-251-3574, and www.goldcoastcasino.com.

ON THE ROAD: Singer Marlene Sai was one of the hundred pilgrims who journeyed to Rome for the Father Damien canonization. She performed "The Lord's Prayer" at a Damien vigil in the Basilica Santa Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome the night before sainthood was bestowed, but her itinerary began earlier in Japan, where she performed with Roy Sakuma, Gary Aiko and Hookena (minusManu Boyd, but featuring Nina Kealiiwahamana).

"Rome was exceptional," said Sai, who also visited Florence, Venice and Paris. She also enjoyed meeting friends aboard the Crystal Lines' Serenity cruise ship, joining Jay and Nalani Andrus for dinner at Nobu's. "Great to eat rice again, after so much pasta, pasta, pasta!" she said. On ship, she visited with Billy Ornellas, who was traveling with wife Mamo and family. "Somehow this ol' body has been holding up in spite of all the miles and varied time zones," said Sai in an e-mail. But her travels continue.

She should be in New York by now, taking in "Billy Elliot The Musical" and "The Lion King" and hoping to connect with Loretta Ables Sayre, still co-starring in "South Pacific," before returning home by Halloween. ...

HALLOWEEN TREATS: Elvis Presley will be in the building, so to speak, this Halloween, at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach. Andy Stankovich, New Zealand's top Presley impersonator, will give shows at 4:30 p.m. poolside and at 9:30 p.m. at the Shore Bird Restaurant. If you're there, might as well make it a night — there will be a costume and karaoke contest. Plus Kuloko Arts of Hawaii, in the hotel's lobby, will feature "Spirit of Elvis," an exhibit and sale of pencil drawings by portrait artist Mary Beth, from 9 to 10 p.m.

If you want to see one of the best Michael Jackson impersonators, don't miss E'Casanova, who shares his uncanny MJ moves and manners in wee-hour dance-oriented wonderment entitled "The Thriller," from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Halloween.

ON THE BILL: performances by Hypersquad and Funkanomestry, with Rick Rock as emcee. Mixmaster DJ Paul Brandon and local fave Kutmaster Spaz will be turntabling, with music of the 1970s, '80s, '90s and the current charts. Add a Halloween costume contest that offers $500 cash prizes; admission is restricted to those 21 and older. Pre-sale tickets: $10, available at the box office on Kaläkaua Avenue, fronting the Royal Hawaiian Center, and at Level 4 nighttime. ...

And that's Show Biz. ...
