Kihei man dies of injuries sustained in motorcycle collision

Advertiser Staff

Maui police say a 21-year-old Kihei man has died of injuries sustained last week when the motorcycle he was operating rear-ended a sedan in Kahului.

The man was identified as Thomas J. Grad. Police say he died Saturday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
He is the 18th traffic fatality on Maui this year, compared with 16 at the same time in 2008.
The collision took place Wednesday night on Mokulele Highway.
Grad was west-bound on Mokulele when he rear-ended a sedan driven by a 62-year-old Kihei woman.
After the impact, Grad’s motorcycle slid along the highway. The sedan went out of control, went onto the grass median and overturned.
Grad, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to the medical center in critical condition.
The driver of the car is being held for observation at the medical center.
Police say speed may be a factor in the collision.
