Advertiser photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize finalist Jeff Widener will give two free talks at the University of Hawaiçi at Mänoa as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series.
Widener will share recent photographs during “Unseen Hawaii,” a public lecture set for 7 p.m. Friday at the East-West Center’s Keoni Auditorium. He will discuss highlights of his 30-year career and show recent photos at a lunchtime discussion, noon Nov. 2 at the East-West Center’s Ohana Room, according to a UH-Mänoa news release.
Widener is best known for his world-famous image, “The Unknown Rebel,” which captured a lone man confronting tanks in Tiananmen Square during the 1989 Beijing riots. The photograph was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for “Spot News Photography.”
Widener has covered assignments — involving civil unrest and wars to social issues — in more than 100 countries, such as East Timor, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Burma, Syria, Jordan, India, Laos, Vietnam and Pakistan. He was the first photojournalist to file digital images from the South Pole.
Since 2004, Widener has been a staff photographer for The Honolulu Advertiser.
