Hawai 'i' s David Ishii birdied the first playoff hole yesterday to win the Asahi Ryoken Cup invitational in Fukuoka, Japan. The two-day event is for top seniors and amateurs.

Ishii opened with a 6-under-par 64 that included a hole-in-one on the 10th hole and an eagle on the 11th. Yesterday, he birdied the final hole of regulation to tie Matsumasa Aoki with a final-round 70.

Ishii then sank a 15-foot putt in the playoff to win the $20,000 first prize. It is the 54-year-old's second win this month. He captured his first official senior title, the Fubon Senior Open, two weeks ago in Taiwan.

Ishii also received $5,000 for the hole-in-one, which he donated to the Senior tour for junior golf.

Ishii, Pearl Country Club's Director of Golf, stays in Japan this week for the Senior Japan Open, then plays the Handa Cup senior major before coming home.

ROSENBERG, MAGEE PREVAIL IN HONOLULU MASTERS OPEN

University of Hawai 'i sophomore Leo Rosenberg won the Honolulu Masters Open title yesterday at Oahu Club, grabbing a wild card into January's USTA Challenger event in the process.

Rosenberg, seeded fourth, defeated Hawai 'i Pacific senior Daniel Luedi,6-4, 6-3, in the men's final. Rosenberg beat HPU's Sebastian Bader in the semifinals. Bader had upset top-seeded Ikaika Jobe, a UH volunteer coach who played on the professional tour.

Luedi, from Sweden, took out the second and third seeds on his way to the final.

Last year Rosenberg won another wildcard event on the Big Island, which gained him entry into the USTA Waikoloa Futures, a step below a Challenger.

Leilani Magee defeated Shana Peete, 6-3, 6-4, to win the women's championship.

Henry Somerville and James Jensen won the men's doubles, and Julie Weisel and Andrea Hermansen took the women's doubles.

HONOLULU MEN'S TEAM SECOND IN SENIOR NATIONALS

A men's team from Honolulu, representing the USTA Hawai 'i, finished second at the USTA League 3.5 Senior National Championships yesterday at Indian Wells, Calif.

Union City (Calif. ) beat Honolulu,3-0, in the final. Earlier in the day, Honolulu beat Federal Way (Wash.) in the semifinals.

The Honolulu team is captained by Kenneth Ocreto and includes Delton Miyamura, Steve Leong, Julian Julian, Domingo Cravalho, Gil Bueno, Andre Moux, Tom Goto and Elton Choy.

The senior nationals drew the top 34 teams — 17 men's and 17 women's — from throughout the nation.
