Punahou, HBA earn top seeds

Punahou and Hawai 'i Baptist earned the top seeds for this week's New City Nissan/Hawai 'i High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball Championships.

Punahou (19-0), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is the top seed in Division I and opens play in Thursday's quarterfinals at McKinley against the winner of the Farrington-Roosevelt match.

O 'ahu Interscholastic champion Kahuku (15-1) is seeded second, followed by No. 3 Waiäkea (16-0), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, and No. 4 Kamehameha-Maui (12-0), the Maui Interscholastic League champion.

Four-time defending state champion Kamehameha (16-3) plays 'Aiea (14-2) in the first round on Wednesday at Radford.

First-round matches start on Wednesday at Radford and McKinley. Saturday's matches will be at the Stan Sheriff Center. The championship match is at 7 p.m.

Two-time defending state champion Hawai 'i Baptist (18-2) is the top seed in Division II. The Eagles, the ILH champion, play the winner of the Waimea-Kailua match in Thursday's quarterfinals at Farrington.

Seeded second is Moloka 'i (14-0), the MIL champion. OIA champion Kaiser (13-3) is seeded third and BIIF champion Hilo (13-4) is fourth.

First-round matches start on Wednesday at Kalani and Farrington. Saturday's matches will be at the Stan Sheriff Center. The championship match is at 5 p.m.
