Kíhei man, 21, dies from injuries suffered in crash

Advertiser Staff

A 21-year-old Kíhei man has died of injuries suffered last week when a motorcycle he was operating rear-ended a sedan in Kahului.

The man was identified as Thomas J. Grad. Police say he died Saturday at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

He is the 18th traffic fatality on Maui this year, compared with 16 by this time in 2008.

The collision took place Wednesday night on Mokulele Highway.

Grad was traveling west when he rear-ended a sedan driven by a 62-year-old Kíhei woman, police said.

Grad's motorcycle then slid along the highway. The sedan went out of control onto a grass median and overturned.

Grad, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to the medical center in critical condition.

The driver of the car is being held for observation at the medical center.

Police say speeding may be a factor in the collision.
