Not all is lost in a UH-less bowl
By Ferd Lewis
Could it be that we haven't seen the last of the Boise State and Fresno State football teams this season after all?
Not the University of Hawai'i Warriors, that is, but college football fans in Hawai'i.
Or, how about this one for old time's sake: June Jones against Pat Hill back at Aloha Stadium?
All have degrees of possibility for the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, if the hometown Warriors don't make the cut.
The Warriors, 2-5 at the moment, need to win five of their six remaining games to become bowl eligible and receive a berth in the game as the Western Athletic Conference's representative against a Conference USA opponent.
Failing that — and the gauntlet is formidable with a road game at Nevada Saturday and home games with Navy and Wisconsin remaining — speculation in the bowl community is that we could end up seeing some familiar faces in Hälawa.
If Boise State doesn't crack the Bowl Championship Series — and what does it say that even a 45-point win over the Warriors here isn't enough just to run in place in the BCS rankings — you can bet the Hawai'i Bowl would love to have the Broncos back here.
Of course the lure would have to be a suitably ranked team, which opens up an intriguing possibility if Houston, currently, 6-1, wins out in the regular season and then loses in the C-USA championship game to come in 11-2.
The Hawai'i Bowl got East Carolina and Central Florida as C-USA runners-up that way and the Cougars' passing attack would make for a good match.
Failing that, Fresno State is a good possibility, especially with the Bulldogs, currently 4-3, standing a good chance of winning out at 9-3. Do that and the Bulldogs would probably be propelled back into the Top 25. Again, Houston would make for a good match.
Even at 8-3, Fresno State has some possibilities with the Hawai'i Bowl folks having made no secret of their hope to get Jones back here as soon as he elevates Southern Methodist to bowl eligibility. That's no small feat for a program that last went bowling, well, here in the 1984 Aloha Bowl against Notre Dame. But at 3-4 — two of the losses in overtime — with five games remaining, a breakthrough is still a possibility .
Ideally, you'd like to see Jones matched with UH but if that isn't possible this season, reprising the Screwdriver Rivalry with Hill and the Bulldogs wouldn't be a bad Plan B.
Nothing would get Aloha Stadium buzzing for Christmas Eve like a Warrior comeback to bowl eligibility, but the cupboard isn't empty of other possibilities, either.
