UH golf team shares 2nd

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot its best round of the a season yesterday — a 284 that put the Warriors in a tie for second after two rounds of the Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational.

San Diego leads the 10-team tournament with 276—550. UH and James Madison (287) share second with 573.

UH sophomore TJ Kua shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for fourth at 138. San Diego's Ben Murray leads with 68—134.

The final round will be played today at the Puakea Golf Course in Líhu'e.

SURFING

PATACCHIA OUSTED

Fred Patacchia Jr. of Oahu's North Shore was eliminated in the third round of the Rip Curl Pro Search men's surfing contest yesterday.

The third round and quarterfinals were completed in 6- to 8-foot waves at Supertubos, Peniche, Portugal.

Australia's Mick Fanning, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the world, defeated Patacchia, 18.33-4.66.

Patacchia was the last remaining Hawaii surfer in the contest.

TENNIS

HONOLULU SECOND

A Honolulu team took second at the USTA League 3.0 Adult National Championships, held earlier this month at Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.

The team lost to Westfield, N.J., 4-1, in the championship. Honolulu defeated Buffalo N.Y., 4-1, in the semifinals.

The Honolulu team was co-captained by Dean Yamashiro and George Uedoi. Other team members were Paul Wong, Doug Choy, Steve Zubowicz, Len Yorimoto, Bruce Ladeira, Rodney Resuello, Drew Pastor Saranillio, Michael Chong, Mark Komatsu, Ed McGovern and Kevin Shimata.

RACQUETBALL

LEE, LOWE WIN

Wahiawä's Joe Lee won his fourth straight 55-older title Sunday at the 14th annual U.S. Open Racquetball Championships in Memphis, Tenn.

Jimmy Lowe, also from Wahiawä, won the 45-older final.

Lowe, who has also won multiple national titles and age-group championships, is on the cover of the current Racquetball Magazine.

Lee beat third-seeded Mike Robinson of Texas in the final. Lowe stopped second-seeded Scott Cullins of Georgia.
