Sacred Hearts Academy senior Clarissa Akana became the first repeat individual champion yesterday at the Civilian Marksmanship Program state high school air riflery championships.

The tournament was held in the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

Akana fired an aggregate total of 548.20 to help the Lancers reclaim the team title that Punahou won a year ago. It was SHA's seventh overall team championship since the tournament's inception in 1999.

Meanwhile, senior Alexander Char captured the boys individual crown with a 532.13 and helped Punahou win its fifth consecutive team title.

"Overwhelming," Akana said of repeating as champion. "I didn't expect it. It's kind of amazing."

Akana shot 192.10 in the prone position, 176.04 standing and 180.06 kneeling.

The experience from last year helped her. She shot 556 last year, one point shy of the tournament record.

"Coming in, I think I was more mentally prepared this time because I've done it before," Akana said.

Akana, who took up air riflery as a freshman, said she is looking at colleges that compete in the sport.

The top 15 finishers earned medals. Akana's teammates all finished within the top 10. Cecilia Wong was third at 538.17, Caitlin Mori was sixth with 528.13 and Kristie Thornburg was 10th with 516.13. The Lancers' team total was 2,130.63.

Punahou was second with 2,106.44. Three of its four shooters were in the top 15. Christie Obatake was second (542.14), Lauren Riford was fourth (535.17) and Arlynne Criste was eighth (524.10). Courtney Won was 16th (506.03).

Char, who was 14th last year, fired a 188.07 in prone, 160.02 standing and 184.04 kneeling.

"I guess I'm elated," Char said. "It probably won't sink in until tomorrow."

Char had hopes of placing high.

"My performance overall has definitely improved since last year," he said. "I came in with high expectations."

The most noticeable difference between shooting at the exhibition hall from ranges the schools shoot at "during the season is the noise.

"When we're in our normal spot, you just hear the pellet hit the metal and that's it," Char said. "But here, you get that echo effect. You can hear everyone shooting from this end of the room (pointing to one end) all the way down to the other end. Ear plugs help, but you still hear a little bit. So it's something to get used to."

Char said he wasn't planning on shooting in college because it might not be offered at where he would like to attend.

"But it sure would look good on my resume," he joked.

Teammates of Char's picking up medals for placing in the top 15 were Alexander Kimura (third, 520.08) and Sheldon Agbayani (ninth, 502.08). Daniel Booth was 21st with 485.07. Punahou's winning team total was 2,039.36.

Runner-up Saint Louis tallied 2,015.26. Jayson Lum, who was second to Char, shot 522.08. Dee Soliman was the only other Crusader to medal, taking fifth at 516.12. Jerel Mudloff was 16th at 496.04 and Noah Staggs was 24th at 481.02.
