Two from Hawaii advance

 • Fine wine unites vintage golfers

Unless you graduated from Leilehua High School, last week was a tough time to try and qualify for the PGA Tour.

Crowd favorite Tadd Fujikawa, an 18-year-old Moanalua High graduate, fired a final-round 76 Saturday to miss advancing out of the First Stage at St. Augustine, Fla. Fujikawa's 289 total left him 44th. The top 22 and ties advanced and that included Leilehua graduate Kevin Warrick, who was 12th at 282.

Leilehua and University of Hawai'i-Hilo graduate Nick Mason was medalist at McKinney, Texas. He also moves on to one of six Second Stage events next month.

All the other golfers with Hawai'i ties were shut out last week. Former Warriors Pierre-Henri Soero (287, T39) and Matt Kodama (286, T53) missed out in Florida and Nevada, and 2004 State Open champ Chad Saladin (296, T48) in Alabama.

MAUI'S CYR IN SIXTH AFTER SECOND ROUND

Maui's Sam Cyr shot the second-best round of the day to move up 35 spots, into sixth place, in yesterday's PGA Qualifying First Stage at Carlton Oaks Country Club, in Santee, Calif. The King Kekaulike graduate fired a 2-under-par 70.

His two-day total of 144 is three shots off the lead. Cyr won the NAIA individual championship the last two years while playing for Point Loma Nazarene.

The top 22 and ties after tomorrow's final round, from each of this week's First Stage events, move on to next month's Second Stage.

Kamehameha graduate Keoke Cotner, Punahou graduate Jim Seki and Waiäkea graduate Jarett Hamamoto stayed close halfway through their First Stage at Grasslands Golf & CC in Lakeland, Fla.

Cotner is tied for 26th after a second-round 70 left him at 142. Seki (70—143), the 1998 state high school champion, and Hamamoto (70—143), who won states in 2001 and 2002, are tied for 35th.

Ty Tryon leads the Grasslands stage at 133 after firing a 10-under 62. Tryon became the PGA Tour's youngest member in 2002, at 17, and has played several tours since.

Tony Finau, who represents Turtle Bay, has a share of 21st at the Lantana Golf Club in Lantana, Texas. Finau, from Utah, shot 71 for the second straight day.
