Slap in the face didn't prevent me from losing

Hawai'i's Scott Junk, a contestant on the "Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights," comments on Episode 7:

Finally after waiting four and a half weeks, I get to fight. All the time put in leading up to this and it was finally here. And to be able to fight Matt Mitrione — the person who was the biggest troublemaker in the house — was a plus.

When (coach) Rashad Evans picked Matt to fight me, I was instantly pumped up. So many things entered my mind and none of them were nice. My mindset changed and I started to get myself ready to fight.

Then that same day, Matt walks up to me and shows me a note. Come on, a note! It read, "bro, I didn't want to fight you but Mike Wessel was scared so I had to."

I know that was all a head game, and it worked. It got me out of my mindset and got me gossiping among the guys in the house. I should have been stronger mentally.

Fight day, I woke up early and ate. We fought at 1 p.m., and I have never been so unprepared in my short career. These last four years I've always had my wife and brother there for me and on that day nothing. I did not realize how much I depended on my wife for moral and mental support. I had nothing but my own mind, and sometimes that's not a good thing.

We get there at noon and yup, no coaches. I think to myself, it's all right, they will be here. The warmup was much different than what I'm used to, and the timing was all based on when (UFC president) Dana White arrived.

Basically, when Dana shows up they say five minutes, then you fight. Walking to the cage is where it gets weird. The music is playing but it's not? What you hear on TV is what we hear, but we hear it on silent instead of loud. There are no fans, no crowd, and no crazy energy. I could not get pumped up.

I had to ask Coach Tom (Blackledge) to slap me and that didn't work either. Time's up. Are you ready? Are you ready? Fight!

I came out flat, off rhythm and a step behind. I was doing OK until the poke in the eye. After that, things got real bad. Matt hit me with a right hook that hurt me bad.

It hurt me so bad that I didn't even remember taking shots in that fight. Watching it on TV was weird because I didn't remember being in the clinch at all in the first round.

Matt definitely won the first half of the round. The second half I felt belonged to me. I landed the bigger shots and was pressing forward. Round two, I kept pressing forward and even got the takedown. Round two ends and (coaches) Rampage Jackson and Tom come running in saying sit down, you got one more round. I sat and tried to recover. Then the ref says we have a decision.

Rampage said no we don't, we got one more round. He was (mad), he said don't rip my guy off because you don't like me.

One judge gave us a tie and the other two gave Matt both rounds so he won by majority decision. I was so tired but heart-broken at the same time. Rampage was (mad)! I didn't see it, but I heard him break the door.

After the fight, "Stitch" the famous cut man was working on my eye and he said "damn, your father will be proud of you." I replied with "yeah, and my cousin Brian will be too."

(Junk's cousin, Brian Felix, died about a week before the show started taping).

I love you my wife and I miss you cuz! Aloha.
