Ex-'Bow fires 65 at PGA qualifier

Hilo's Jarett Hamamoto scorched Grasslands Golf & Country Club for a 7-under-par 65 yesterday in the third round of the PGA Qualifying School's First Stage at Lakeland, Fla.

Hamamoto, a two-time state high school champion who played for the University of Hawai'i, is tied for eighth at 8-under 208 going into today's final round.

Kamehameha graduate Keoke Cotner (67—209) shares 11th, and Punahou graduate Jim Seki (68—211) is tied for 20th.

Elsewhere, Maui's Sam Cyr (71—216) is tied for 11th going into the final day at Santee, Calif., and Turtle Bay's Tony Finau shot 71 for the second straight day and is tied for 27th after two rounds at Lantana, Texas.

The top 22 and ties advance to Second Stage.

RUNNING

HAWAI'I ARMY WINS

A team from Hawai'i won the first Commanders Cup at the 25th annual Army Ten Miler earlier this month at the Pentagon.

A mixed team from Hawai'i also competed in the event, which featured 500 other military and civilian teams and more than 21,000 finishers.

Hawai'i active duty men's team members and their times were Paul Lancaster (56:12), Marty Muchow (55:05), Shawn Dodge (58:00), John Mozer (55:51) and Sammy Ngatia (56:11).

Hawai'i mixed team members were Deborah Stonerook, Ashley Gilbert, Christopher Calway, Joseph Kendall, Ryan Moorcroft and Daniel Lopez.

The Hawai'i teams held a local qualifying in June to determine their teams. Times can be found at www.armytenmiler.com.

TENNIS

TURKEY TOURNEY SET

This year's 10th annual K2Tens Turkey Tournament will benefit the Moanalua High School Tennis Court Lights Project.

The tournament will be Nov. 11 at Moanalua. Cost is $25 person, with a round-robin doubles format. Adults play from 8 a.m. to noon, with a potluck lunch until 1 p.m. and the junior tournament from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Entry deadline is Sunday. Call Kyle Kaneshiro (721-TENS/8367) for entry forms or more information.

UH SEEKING HOSTS

The University of Hawai'i men's team is also looking for families willing to host the Brigham Young men's team when it comes in next month.

The Cougars need guest housing for four players who arrive Nov. 14. Those that can help should call volunteer coach Mike Burger at 398-6441.
