Xcel Pro surfing contest starts at Sunset Beach

The opening day of the Xcel Pro men's surfing contest is on today at Sunset Beach.

Wave-face heights are around 6 feet in the morning, but are expected to build in the 10- to 15-foot range in the afternoon.

The first and second rounds are expected to run today.

Hawai'i surfers scheduled to compete today include defending Xcel Pro champion Pancho Sullivan, and former world champions Derek Ho, Sunny Garcia
and Andy Irons.
