Kahului Jodo Mission celebrating centennial

Advertiser Staff

Kahului Jodo Mission will celebrate its centennial with a three-day event, beginning Friday on Maui, around the theme "Senzo Dai Dai," Remembering Our Ancestors.

The temple, formerly known as Pu'unene Jodo Mission, was established in 1909 in Young Hee Village, in the plantation camp of Pu'unene.

In 1959, Hawaiian Commercial Sugar Co. closed the camp and moved cane production to an expanded Kahului subdivision called "Dream City." The decision was made by temple members to also build another temple near the new cane fields.

The new temple opened as Kahului Jodo Mission in July 1969 near Maui High School, with sweeping views of Haleakalä and the West Maui Mountains.

The hard work and sacrifices of temple members will be recognized with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. Friday in the church social hall. On Nov. 7, festivities begin with a 10 a.m. service; 11 a.m. luncheon (registration deadline tomorrow; adults, $25; children, $12) at Maui Beach Hotel; 6 p.m. evening service at the temple, and 7 to 9 p.m. matsuri (bon dancing) on temple grounds. A family service and breakfast is planned for 8 a.m. Nov. 8 at the temple.

Former members and their families — as well as the public — are invited to participate in activities. For information or luncheon registration, call 808-244-4181.

MUSIC, CHORAL EVENTS AT 2 CHURCHES TOMORROW

Several music and choral events are planned:

• A Choral Evensong in observance of All Saints Day will be sung at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Andrew.

Evensong, sometimes called evening prayer — sung in cathedrals for centuries — offers prayer and song as thanks for the day past and blessing for the coming night. The service will feature the music of Victoria, Murrill, Thiman and Faure.

The service is free and open to the public. For information, call 524-2822.

• "Music for a Royal Occasion," featuring George Friedrich Handel, will be celebrated at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu in Makiki.

The Lutheran Church of Honolulu choir, the Bach Chamber Choir and Bach Chamber Orchestra will perform. The featured soloist will be 29-year-old countertenor Christopher Conley of Kentucky, who for three consecutive years has won the District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

The church's regular Sunday night Gregorian chant program will be pre-empted by the concert.

Admission at the door is $25 for general public and $15 for seniors and full-time students. Half of the proceeds will go toward completion of the church's music archive. For information, call 941-2566.

WORD OF LIFE OFFERS DISASTER-RELIEF BENEFIT

Word of Life Christian Center will offer an "Operation Life" Benefit Concert to provide aid to victims of recent Pacific area natural disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons.

The fundraising concert for the church's "Operation Life" relief fund, will feature Natural Vibes, B.E.T., Ten Feet, Princess Ilona and others.

The concert is to be from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7 (doors open at 4:30 p.m.) at the Queen Street church. Free parking is available at the makai/diamondhead corner of South and Queen streets.

Admission is $20. For tickets, go online to www.honoluluboxoffice.com, or call 528-4044.
