RENO, Nev. — After five days of waiting to see how the University of Hawai'i's quarterback situation would shake out, Las Vegas oddsmakers have installed Nevada as a 28 1/2-point favorite on the betting line for today's 10 a.m. (Hawai'i time) game.
It is the biggest spread for a UH Western Athletic Conference road game since 2000 when the Warriors were 37-point underdogs to Texas Christian and LaDainian Tomlinson. UH lost that one, 41-21.
The UH-Nevada game had remained without a line since Warrior starting quarterback Bryant Moniz suffered a late first quarter concussion last Saturday against Boise State.
Even as of yesterday afternoon several Las Vegas and Reno sports books did not list odds for the game.
Moniz, who practiced this week, said he is "feeling good" and ready. UH doctors have cleared him to play and coaches said as long as he was cleared he would start.
Moniz and the offense did very little at yesterday's walk-through workout at Mackay Stadium, site of today's game, where special teams practice took up most of the session.
NOTES
Quarterback Brent Rausch has also been cleared to play.
Nevada officials estimate a crowd of 18,000-20,000 for the game in Mackay Stadium, which seats 29,993. A spokesman said the three-day holiday weekend will likely keep some potential fans away. Today is Nevada Day, the anniversary of the state's admission.
The forecast for today's game is for temperatures of 65-67 degrees at kickoff.
