A woman who nearly drowned Sunday at 'Anini Beach has been upgraded from critical to serious condition, a Kaua'i County spokeswoman said yesterday.

The 22-year-old woman had been snorkeling near the boat ramp at 'Anini Beach at 3 p.m. when bystanders heard what they thought was a scream.

A vacationing police officer swam out and found her face-down in the water. He brought her to shore and tried to resuscitate her. Hanalei firefighters and paramedics took over and performed advanced life support.
