State budget crisis forces library's temporary closure

Advertiser Staff

A public library on Maui will close temporarily because of the state's money woes.

State library officials yesterday said Lahaina Public Library will close Sept. 12 and reopen Sept. 22.

During the closure, patrons may return library materials to other public libraries on Maui. They may also renew materials through any branch or by calling toll-free 800-820-7368.

State officials say the library system is experiencing fragile staffing situations due to a prolonged hiring freeze and retirements, leaving 70 vacant positions.
