ARLINGTON, Texas — Adam Lind helped power the Toronto Blue Jays to a big early lead with his first career grand slam. He then put the game finally out of reach after Texas cut an 11-run deficit to one.

Lind finished with a career-high eight RBIs after adding a solo homer and three-run double in a seven-run ninth for Toronto in a wild 18-10 win over the Rangers last night.

"You know you have to outslug these guys. They came back tonight and showed why they're in the hunt for the playoffs," Lind said. "I hit it on the sweet spot on a couple of pitches."

Rod Barajas also homered twice and drove in five runs. He hit a three-run homer in a five-run first, a sacrifice fly in the third and led off the fifth with a 438-foot blast to left-center for an 11-0 lead.

The Rangers pulled to 11-10 in the seventh on Chris Davis' sacrifice fly to deep center, where Vernon Wells made a leaping catch on the warning track to keep another runner at first base.

"We put ourselves in the position to make a push there at the end. You have to give credit, they piled on runs in the ninth," Rangers third baseman Michael Young said.

YANKEES 5, ORIOLES 1:

Andy Pettitte retired his first 20 batters before a lamentable seventh-inning sequence spoiled both his perfect game and no-hit bid for visiting New York. Pettitte (12-6) was poised to finish the seventh without allowing a baserunner, but former Oriole Jerry Hairston Jr. let a two-out grounder by Adam Jones slip through his legs for an error. Nick Markakis followed with an opposite-field single inside the third-base line.

RAYS 11, TIGERS 7:

Carlos Pena hit his AL-best 38th homer and drove in four runs to help visiting Tampa Bay beat Detroit. Tampa Bay scored six times in the first inning against the AL Central leaders, capped by Pena's two-run drive.

ANGELS 10, MARINERS 0:

Vladimir Guerrero hit two home runs, one a monster shot into the upper deck, and Juan Rivera added a three-run homer for visiting Los Angeles. Joe Saunders (11-7) allowed three hits in seven innings. He improved to 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA in three starts against Seattle this season.

ATHLETICS 8, ROYALS 5:

Ryan Sweeney had a two-run triple and scored the go-ahead run on Adam Kennedy's bases loaded fielder's choice grounder in the sixth inning to help host Oakland beat Kansas City. Rajai Davis added two hits and two RBIs for the A's, who won for only the fifth time in their last 13 games.

TWINS 4, WHITE SOX 1:

Joe Mauer and Jason Kubel homered in the third inning, and Nick Blackburn pitched seven solid innings as host Minnesota beat Chicago. Blackburn (9-9) allowed six hits and one run with no walks and seven strikeouts.
