Firefighters still working to contain Molokai brushfire

Firefighters and helicopters continued to battle a persistent brushfire on Molokai today.

Gen Iinuma, director of Maui County Civil Defense, said the fire is about 80 percent contained.
Iinuma said about 60 firefighters from various state and county agencies are working in shifts, some keeping track of hot spots through the evening and the others going in to follow up at first light.
Firefighters have been battling the blaze for six days now.
“We still have a complement of personnel out in the field that’s moving with the active fire in forested areas,” Iinuma said. “And then we’ve got the helicopters making drops in difficult terrain.”
Iinuma said there were eight to 10 flare-ups last night along various fronts.
With the Molokai fire continuing to consume acreage, Iinuma urged Maui County residents to “help us and help themselves” as the state enters the dry season.
“We’re just hoping people will look around their areas and clear out (dry brush) and not put themselves at risk,” Iinuma said.
