Hawaiian Airlines has joined its interisland competitors in implementing a $10 fee for first checked bags.

The state's largest carrier cited its rising costs for the move, which takes effect Sept. 14.

"Our costs continue to rise and fares have simply not kept pace. We've held the line on this fee as long as possible, but have to remain competitive," said Glenn Taniguchi, Hawaiian's senior vice president of marketing and sales.

Customers exempt from the new charge include members of the airline's premium frequent-flier programs, first-class passengers, corporate members and passengers traveling on international tickets that include stops in Hawai'i.

Hawaiian said it also will waive the first bag fee for child carseats, carriers and strollers, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes and other personal assistive devices.

Competitors Island Air, Mokulele Airlines and go! also charge $10 for the first checked-in luggage.

The airline industry began implementing fees for passengers' first checked-in luggage to make up for soaring fuel prices.

Hawaiian will continue to charge $17 for a second checked bag on interisland flights.

For Mainland flights, Hawaiian charges $15 for the first checked-in bag when pre-paid online. The company charges $20 for the first luggage when paying at the airport. The charge for a second checked bag on Mainland flights is $25 when pre-paid online and $30 when paid at the airport.
