Governor to discuss budget, labor talks via live webcast

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle will have a live webcast this afternoon to provide an update on the state budget and contract negotiations with public-sector labor unions.

The Web address is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Go to www.hawaii.gov/.

Lingle last week said she would pursue further spending cuts and layoffs after rejecting the counter offer by the Hawaii Government Employees Association to the state's latest contract offer.

The state and the HGEA have a binding arbitration hearing scheduled tomorrow. The state is also in talks with the three other public-sector unions.

Lingle, who has ordered 1,100 layoffs of state workers starting in November, estimates the budget deficit at $884 million through June 2011.
