Advertiser staff

The third annual Onipaa celebration commemorating the birthday of Queen Liliuokalani, Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, kicks off at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6 at Iolani Palace. Sponsored by the Hawaii Pono Coalition, the commemoration includes an ecumenical prayer service at noon, followed by performances by Hoku-award winning entertainers Amy Hanaialii and Olomana, as well as Kawika Trask and Friends, Halau I Ka Wekiu, and the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Chorus. Admission to the Palace will be free.
In addition to the entertainment, visitors will be able to learn about Hawaiian history and culture through a variety of informational booths.
The Hawaii Pono Coalition is a consortium of Hawaiian-serving organizations dedicated to telling the history of Hawaii. Recent coalition events include “Mai Poina” walking tours depicting the four critical days culminating in the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy.
