Power restored after large outage on Kauai

Advertiser Staff

Much of Kauai was without power for about a half-hour this afternoon after a generating unit failed.

The outage began at about 3:20 after a generator at the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative went down, said Shelley Paik, KIUC spokeswoman. A backup unit was switched on, but it took about 15 minutes before it went on-line, she said.
Paik said “a large portion” of the utility’s 33,000 customers were without power. Electricity was restored to all within a half-hour, she said.
The outage affected customers in Hanapepe, Koloa, Lihue, Kapaa, Poipu, Lawai, Kalaheo, Princeville, Kilauea and Hanalei.
