Korean heartthrob stars in new 'Style'

One of Hawai'i's favorite Korean pretty-boy drama stars, Ryu Siwon of "Paper Crane and Wedding," teams up with voluptuous actress Kim Hae-soo ("Tazza") in the new drama "Style," which has been a hit in South Korea since it premiered last month.

"Style" has similarities to the American movie "The Devil Wears Prada." Not just the title of the series, Style is also the name of a fictional fashion magazine edited by Park Gi-ja (Kim Hae-soo), a ruthless perfectionist who only trusts herself.

The drama is partly popular for Park's wardrobe.

The series about style and the fashion industry in South Korea may actually be influencing current fashion trends. South Korean women interested in the latest trends have tuned in to "Style."

So if Kim Hae-soo is the Meryl Streep of this drama, who is Anne Hathaway? Lee Ji-ah plays Lee Seo-jung, a fashion writer starting from the bottom of the fashion magazine company. She's trying to work her way up but keeps getting battered by editor Park.

When Seo-jung hits bottom at work and her three-year-relationship ends, tall and handsome chef Seo Woo-jin (Ryu Siwon) enters her life.

To make matters more complicated, Woo-jin is Park's ex-boyfriend. Then to add another twist, Woo-jin, who is from a wealthy family, is rumored to be related to the publisher of Style magazine.

"Style" may gain viewers just because of its male lead. One of Hawai'i's first fan clubs was formed for actor Ryu Siwon, who gained his popularity from the older drama "Paper Crane."

That series, which revolved around auto racing, had a lot of similarities to Ryu's personal life. I had a chance to visit his office a few years ago, attempting to get him to visit Hawai'i, and I remember the racing memorabilia in his office, including an ashtray in the shape of a tire.

Ryu is also very popular in Japan and has made several appearances there.

"Style" is slated for 20 episodes on the network SBS and will be starting in Hawai'i on Sept. 18, running in the Friday/Saturday drama slots.

If you miss the starting episode, you can catch it the following day at noon.
