UAB beats UH soccer team, 2-0

Allison Young and Emma Smith scored goals as Alabama-Birmingham remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Hawai'i yesterday in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Blazers, off to the best start in program history, are 5-0. The Rainbow Wahine fell to 1-2-1.

Young scored in the 28th minute off a pass from Laura McCalla. Smith scored in the 88th minute after stealing the ball from a defender then kicking a low shot into the goal.

Britta Bourne had a game-high five shots, including three on goal, for Hawai'i.

VOLLEYBALL

HILO STAYS UNBEATEN

Josimara Pinheiro had 13 kills, Fabiane Seben added 12 and Morgan Bonney 11 as Hawai'i-Hilo remained unbeaten with a 25-11, 25-10, 25-19 win over Urbana (Ohio) in the Nanook Classic yesterday at Fairbanks, Alaska.

Katie Swenson had 42 assists for the Vulcans (6-0), who hit .384.

ELSEWHERE

• Brigham Young-Hawai'i lost two matches at the Central Washington Invitational in Ellensburg, Wash. yesterday.

Jessica Bettencourt had 14 kills as Seattle Pacific beat BYUH, 25-16, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17, while Kady Try had 16 kills and 11 digs Central Washington beat BYUH, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.

Roseanne Vea had 11 kills and 19 digs in the first match and 11 kills and 15 digs in the second match for the Seasiders (3-4). Kylee Nawahine had 12 kills against Central Washington.

• Rheann Fall had match-highs in kills (24) and digs (19) as Cal State Monterey Bay beat Hawai'i Pacific, 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 15-10, yesterday in the California Clash tournament at San Francisco.

Julia Gruszecka had 18 kills and Mariana Souza 14 for the Sea Warriors (2-3). Sanoe Recca added 12 digs and Tricia Yoshimura 11 for HPU.

• Roxanne Neely had 11 kills, 22 digs and 26 assists as Cal State East Bay beat Chaminade, 25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 26-24, 15-5, yesterday in the California Clash tournament at San Francisco.

Courtney Lorusso had 18 kills and eight digs for the Silverswords (1-3). Tanya Alvino added 42 assists, and Whitney Viveiros and Malilimago Toailoa each had nine kills for CU.

TENNIS

CANCER FUNDRAISER

The second annual Adult Tennis Tournament to benefit the Hawai'i Children's Cancer Foundation, will be Monday at the Moanalua High School courts.

Cost is $20 per person. Format is round-robin doubles so participants do not need to bring a partner.

There are four divisions — 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0/4.5. Beginner (2.5) and Intermediate (3.0 and 3.5) divisions play from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Advanced divisions from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

UHH TRYOUTS SET

The Hawai'i-Hilo baseball team will hold tryouts tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the UHH baseball field. It was originally scheduled to be held today.

All registered walk-on candidates must first take a physical, starting at 9 a.m. in the UHH gym.
