Yesterday was a fretful day for the 30 or so Washington Redskins considered to be on the bubble.

"Time to wait ... and wait ... oh ... and wait!" came the tweet from quarterback Chase Daniel.

The final audition for jobs had come the night before, when the Redskins lost, 24-17, to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Colt Brennan, a former University of Hawai'i standout, and Daniel are in a battle for the No. 3 quarterback spot.

Daniel, a rookie from Missouri, struggled early against Jacksonville, but threw a TD pass in the fourth quarter after Brennan went down with a bruised knee and tight hamstring.

Brennan had his best game of the preseason, ending a run of three straight games with an interception, and his injuries are minor.

Brennan finished the preseason 23 of 43 for 249 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

Daniel was 14 of 24 for 143 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Redskins' top two quarterbacks are Jason Campbell and Todd Collins.

VIKINGS

FAVRE FINED $10,000 FOR CRACK-BACK BLOCK

Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre was fined $10,000 by the NFL for his crack-back block on Houston defensive back Eugene Wilson in a preseason game.

The play happened Monday night at Houston in Favre's first extensive action since he signed with the Vikings on Aug. 18.

The 39-year-old lined up at receiver in Minnesota's version of the wildcat offense. Rookie receiver Percy Harvin took the snap and started running around the left end in Favre's direction. Despite playing with sore ribs, the quarterback crouched and threw his body at Wilson's legs to cut him down.

CARDINALS

THREE WITH LOCAL TIES CUT BY ARIZONA

Three players with Hawai'i ties were cut by Arizona, including veteran safety Aaron Francisco.

Francisco, a standout on special teams, played in 53 games over four seasons after making the club as an undrafted free agent out of BYU in 2005. He graduated from Kahuku High.

Former University of Hawai'i players — fullback Reagan Maui'a and cornerback Jameel Dowling — also were cut.

ELSEWHERE

Bills: Buffalo offensive coordinator Turk Schonert has been fired after the offense's dismal performance in the preseason. The move was announced by coach Dick Jauron yesterday, less than a day after the Bills (1-4) closed their preseason with a 17-6 loss to Detroit. Quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt will take over as the Bills prepare to open the season at New England on Sept. 14.

Bears: Chicago running back Kevin Jones will miss the season after tearing ligaments in his left ankle in the preseason finale Thursday against the Cleveland Browns. He was injured in the first quarter on a late hit by Marcus Benard following a 6-yard run. Jones is expected to undergo surgery next week, the team said.

Saints: Tight end Billy Miller said that he tore his right Achilles tendon during New Orleans' final preseason game Thursday night against Miami, likely ending his 10th season before it started. Last season, Miller caught 45 passes for 579 yards and one touchdown.

COWBOYS 35, VIKINGS 31

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress was still steamed even 20 minutes after his team wrapped up the preseason against Dallas last night.

After watching Sage Rosenfels and John David Booty each throw interceptions that were returned for touchdowns in a loss to the Cowboys, the typically flat-lined coach let loose.

"At times it was embarrassing," Childress said. "I'll end up putting that on myself, not having them ready to come out of the locker room at halftime. All the quarterbacks I've ever coached have some regard for the football and you can't throw it to them."

Rosenfels and Booty were likely competing with Tarvaris Jackson for two roster spots behind Brett Favre.

Jackson was 2 for 4 for 42 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Dugan.

Rosenfels went 7 for 15 for 115 yards. Booty was 7 for 13 for 85 yards. On back-to-back plays in the third quarter, Rosenfels and Booty threw interceptions that the Cowboys returned for scores.

Childress yanked Rosenfels after Patrick Watkins scored on a 23-yard interception return. But he was in again one pass later when Steve Octavien returned Booty's interception 44 yards for a score.

Favre and the rest of the Vikings starters did not play in the game.

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips rested Tony Romo and most of his regular starters, and it showed. Dallas turned over the ball four times, leading to 21 Minnesota points.

TEXANS 27, BUCS 20

TAMPA, Fla. — Former Chicago Bears starter Rex Grossman threw two touchdown passes and also produced a pair of field goals, pacing Houston's victory over Tampa Bay, possibly earning a backup job behind Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky.

"I don't control any of that. All I wanted to do was go out and have a good game for either this team or somebody else," Grossman said.

Grossman, who led the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006, teamed with Jacoby Jones on an 87-yard scoring play on his first pass, and finished 9 of 16 for 197 yards.
