The 8,000-acre Molokai brush fire, which has been burning since Aug. 29, is 100 percent contained, according to Gen Iinuma, Maui County Civil Defense director.

Iinuma said that as of 4 p.m. yesterday the fire was 100 percent contained.

He said that firefighters from Maui and personnel from the National Park Service and the Department of Land and Natural Resources will start pulling out Sunday and the fire's "remaining hot spots" will be monitored by Molokai firefighters.

The only property damage was to a garage and the only injury was a firefighter treated for smoke inhalation. Iinuma said that given the magnitude and duration of the fire: "We were very fortunate, and that is testimony to the efforts of the personnel involved."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
