The Waiawa brushfire has been contained, but due to smoldering hot spots, firefighters will continue to monitor the area over the next few days before declaring the fire completely out, the Honolulu Fire Department said this afternoon.

Firefighters made the announcement at 4 p.m. today that they had contained the fire that yesterday had closed the H-2 Freeway northbound, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig.
The fire had grown from 150 acres to more than 250 acres. The cause of the fire that began about 12:35 p.m. yesterday is unknown and is under investigation, Seelig said.
Earlier today, firefighters are using five engines and three water tankers to fight the brushfire and about 30 firefighters were on scene using hose lines and hand tools to extinguish hot spots and stop the fire from spreading.
The city departments of Parks and Recreation, Facility Maintenance and Emergency Management also had helped with the fire, Seelig said.
He said the fire is also not threatening any structures.
