Enrollment at Hawaii's public, charter schools sees 0.4% increase for 2009-10

The state's official enrollment for the 2009-10 school year — with all 257 DOE schools and 31 charter schools — is 178,649, an increase of 0.4 percent compared with last year's total of 177,871.

The DOE public schools enroll 170,830 (up 332 from last year) students, or 95.6 percent of the total while charter schools have 7,819 (up 446 from last year), or 4.4 percent of the total.

Public school enrollment has increased less than 1 percent compared with last year’s count of 170,498. The official enrollment for the 2009-10 school year is 170,830 at 257 schools, including 153,398 in regular education and 17,432 in special education.

On Oahu, Leeward is still the largest administrative district with 38,766 students, followed by Central with 32,409, Honolulu with 31,084 and Windward with 15,188. On the Neighbor Islands, Big Island has 23,671 students, Maui has 20,351 and Kauai has 9,288.
