Police arrest stepfather after toddler reportedly drowns

Advertiser Staff

Police arrested the stepfather of a Hilo girl after the child reportedly drowned Saturday afternoon at an apartment building.

Police and fire paramedics responded shortly after 3 p.m. to a report of a home accident at the Hilo Valhala Apartments at 120 Pu'ueo Street, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported. An ambulance took the girl, described as 3 to 7 years old, to Hilo Medical Center, where she later died, according to Hilo police.

Police iarrested Anthony Poulin, 30, at the three-story apartment building. They said Poulin was being investigated for suspected abuse of the girl.

Police did not say whether the reported drowning took place in a bathtub or by some other means.
