Grimsey, Rowe top swimmers

Athletes from Australia captured the top spots in the Waikiki Rough Water Swim yesterday.

Trent Grimsey, of Cashmere, finished the 2.4-mile course in 42 minutes, 20 seconds as the first overall male swimmer. James Fennell, of Adelaide, South Australia, placed second in 44:04 and John Flanagan, of Mililani, finished third in 44:14.

Luane Rowe, of Sydney, was the first overall female finisher in 47:21, followed by Elene Jones, whose hometown was not listed in the results provided, in 49:24 and Melissa Myers, of Honolulu, in 49:58.

VOLLEYBALL

UH SLIPS TO NO. 6

After two losses over the weekend, the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team dropped two spots to No. 6 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

Penn State (6-0) remains No. 1, followed by Texas and Washington.

Hawai'i (4-2), which lost to Texas and California, hosts the Volleyball Challenge starting Thursday against Weber State. Also in the tournament are Texas-San Antonio and No. 10 Stanford.

In this week's AVCA Division II poll, Hawai'i-Hilo (8-0) received 31 votes, putting the Vulcans three spots out of the Top 25.

Hilo senior middle hitter Fabiane Seben, who hit .437 and had 68 kills in helping the Vulcans go 5-0 on the road last week, was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for the second straight week.
